This is fado rewired and recast. Lina, a Portuguese singer renowned for her haunting interpretations of Amalia Rodrigues’s classic repertoire, performs fado classics with Spanish producer/multi-instrumentalist Raül Refree – (Rosalía, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo).

Lina and Raül Refree have sloughed off the old trappings and exacting traditions of fado and made it into a perfect fit for the twenty-first century. Replacing guitars with piano and analogue synths, they have reinvented the music, and done it while keeping the rich beauty of the melodies and the aching poetry of the words that are such a vital part of the tradition.

Their new album Lina_Raül Refree, to be released in January 2020, is fado for today, a sound that goes beyond geography. It sheds the old skin for the new, yet still leaves it as Portugal’s soul; a beautiful cry of emotion.

Lina has a long background in fado; her family has sung it for two generations and she took it up when she was 15, then studied opera and turned to the stage where she portrayed fado’s great queen, Amália Rodrigues, before being invited to become a regular at Lisbon’s iconic Clube de Fado. Lina has released two albums –Carolina in 2014, recorded with António Zambujo’s producer Ricardo Cruz, and enCantado in 2017, produced by Diogo Clemente, who has worked with Carminho and Mariza.

Lina invited Raül to produce her new album because of his collaboration with the flamenco incendiary Rosalía on her record Los Angeles, the disc that first made her name.

Raül Refree has been widely praised for his solo work, such the album La Otra Mitad, as well as his ground-breaking productions combine experimental rock, flamenco and pop with occasional jazz influences.  He has also produced albums by Lee RanaldoRocío MárquezRoger MasNacho UmbertSenior i el BrutalChristina RosenvingeLas MigasSilvia Pérez CruzJosh RouseKiko VenenoMala Rodríguez, and Els Pets.
