Guided Tour

Join us for a chance to explore Union Chapel and its fascinating history.

Described as a ‘Gothic tornado’ on Upper Street,  Union Chapel is an architectural gem and originally one of the largest nonconformist churches in London. It houses  a unique Willis Organ, with unusual water powered bellows,  an octagonal interior and stunning stained glass windows.

Now an award winning music venue, a homelessness project as well as being an inclusive church, the Chapel still towers over Upper Street. Take a tour and learn more from professional guides about Islington’s nonconformist heritage, the Chapel’s triumphant survival after a wartime bomb, and the fascinating story of its near demolition and in the 1980s, at a time when Victorian architecture was only just being appreciated.

The end of the tour will feature a demonstration of the only Henry Willis organ with working hydraulics in England. George Allan will demonstrate the 141-year-old organ which is hidden from view so that when it is played, it is almost as if the building itself is exuding music. It boasts over 2,000 pipes with the longest being 16 feet!

Take some time to celebrate the history of this incredible Chapel with a guided tour of one of the most iconic buildings in Islington.
