A lazy afternoon with music, tea and cake

An event for all ages, produced by Arctic Circle

We finish the Summer season is suitable style with the first presentation of the Britten Sinfonia Academy alongside returning ensemble Stick In The Wheel. The Academy present an afternoon of found folk melodies woven into classical counterpoint by some of the great modern composer, which exploring suggest the idea of music as a universal language. In a performance of togetherness and of unity the orchestra will perform music from across the globe including De Falla, Ligeti and Faure alongside a premiere by Franco-British composer Josephine Stephenson called Writhen. This new work incorporates songs from different traditions relating to young women’s ‘coming of age’, drawing on material from English, French and Lithuanian folk songs – “Music to arrest the ears and stop the heart” (The Times).

Stick In The Wheel have been described as one of the unruliest acts in the contemporary English folk scene, finding inspiration in centuries-old work songs that speak to present-day issues of class and marrying acoustic instruments with dance production techniques. They return to Daylight Music presenting songs from their second album: “Follow Them True”.

Britten Sinfonia Academy brings together talented young instrumentalists from the east of England with its own world class chamber musicians. Each year Academy members take part in four special projects, learning how to perform collaboratively and trying out new skills, styles and musical genres whilst being mentored side by side by Britten Sinfonia players. It’s a versatile and exciting ensemble that have acted in museums, improvised with laptop artists, led family workshops, performed at festivals and premiered a number of new works.
