Ian Boakes

Sunday 18th May

Ian was born in 1966 to a musical family, and soon started singing with his
home church in Honiton. He took up the piano at an early age, copying
everything he heard before learning to read music, and this love of playing
by ear has continued as congregations will testify, having recognised some
rather unusual variations when he plays. Various choral experiences at
school, church and college singing internationally have since left a
thorough understanding of both religious and secular traditions.
Organ lessons were taken in Devon, using his mother's collection of scores
and her experiences as organist in Newport, Isle of Wight.
Whilst studying Civil Engineering at Porstmouth, Ian enlarged on his
Liturgical background, and after graduation, came to London to work with
the homeless. In each location the availability of instruments led to a
greater understanding of the organ, and it's use in modern worship.
Working at St.Paul's Cathedral as a Virger enabled Ian an unrivalled
experience in all types of worship, which he experimented with as Organist
and Director of music for over ten years at St.Mary-of-Eton, Hackney Wick.
Several compositions for the choir followed, of which some were broadcast
for a variety of events. Ian was invited by the Bishop of Stepney to carry
out workshops for clergy and musicians in the move to "Common Worship", and
maintains strong links with the Stepney area despite now working in the
financial sector.
Since leaving St.Mary's, Ian has maintained his choral singing with choirs
in London and Devon, taken-up some solo singing work, and continues as a
freelance organist.
Ian is currently the Organist in Residence for The Union Chapel, Islington.
