The Tower

English Heritage & the Heritage Lottery Fund support Tower work.

English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund have now confirmed an immediate grant of £25,000 for Stage 1 of the repair of the Tower, and in-principle approval for a further grant of £396,000 for Stage 2 of the works, our major priority for 2009.

We are very grateful to EH and HLF for this heartening recognition of the importance of the Chapel and its landmark Tower.

The Tower from Upper StreetThe Tower suffered damage in the second world war and the Bath stone and brickwork is badly decayed. The spire has also suffered a number of lightning strikes in recent years and the upper parts of the tower must now be repaired
urgently.

An earlier phase saw the repair of the cupola and the re-covering of many of the Chapel's 37 roofs.

The scaffolding which has now gone up has now been purchased, at a cost of £188,000, and this will be sold once the works have been completed.

We will now start raising the funds needed to match these grants and complete phases one and two of the building works.

If you can help with a donation, of any size, we will be most grateful.  Details of how to make donations are at the bottom of the Friends home page here.
