The Tower

Watch the Restoration video with Stefan Gates Tower

Union Chapel is a Grade II* listed building which badly needs repairs.

Much needs to be done both outside and in. Crumbling brickwork, leaking windows and statues with broken noses all need attention - but our first priority is the tower.

The tower is in immediate need of repair. The upper sections of the tower have now become so decayed that immediate steps must be taken to support them.

The Tower was added in 1888, 18 years after the completion of the Chapel and the Sunday School on Compton Avenue. The original 1875 design was for a typical Gothic revival 'Somerset Parish Church' style four square tower. James Cubitt redesigned it during the 1880's and made it more fashionable, civic and ‘English’ style.

The scaffolding will support the gables and the masonry archers below them. There will then be 3 or 4 phases of repair work over 3-5 years, with repairs descending to ground level in 2012 – 14. The total cost of the work is £1.5million at today’s prices – nearly £2million by 2012. So there is a lot of fundraising to do!

You can support the restorations by donating online, with regular donations via standing order, or by remembering us in your will. You can also become a friend of Union Chapel. The Friends of Union Chapel offer members a range of fun activities through which they can support the restoration work. Just click to find out more.

Margin Project

Part of Union Chapel, the Margins Project, a project providing services and facilities for those in crisis and homelessness. The Margins Project was born in October 1995 as a direct response to the high incidence of rough sleeping and those presenting on the doorsteps of Islington’s Union Chapel in need.

Central to the project is the 'open-to-all' drop in centre every Sunday, a time when few other services are available. Here they provide services for over 125 people, including a substantial two-course meal, showers, toiletry products, haircuts and laundry facilities. There, guests can speak with the trained Resettlement and Advice Worker, who will liaise with all statutory agencies on behalf of the clients if needed and will accompany them to any appointments where appropriate. In the winter months the centre opens a weekly Cold Weather Shelter, providing beds and food for those in need. The project also runs an Arts programme and a Volunteer programme, centred around a training and skills development project, The Oasis Cafe.

MarginsThe projects long-term ambition is to provide and encourage every guest with the opportunity to engage in our volunteer programme and vocational led training programmes. The unique level of support and active engagement the Margins Project can provide will enable our guests to develop self-confidence, direction and stability that will lead to a balanced lifestyle, sustainable employment and a positive future.

Support Margins Project by donating online or monthly commitment via standing order. We can also support you with advice if you wish to leave a gift in your will. We are very grateful to any funding or help we receive in helping us to maintain our service for people in crisis.

Organ Restoration

The organ was built for Union Chapel in 1877 by Henry (Father) Willis, and is still in its original condition. Its sound is greatly enhanced by the generous acoustic of the building. Apart from regular church services, the organ is often used during concerts particularly choral ones for which the Chapel’s acoustics are well-suited. “The organ has suffered comparatively little alteration over the years. It survives to provide a convincing resume of Henry Willis’s style, when he was at the height of his powers in the mid- 1870’s….All told is a fine example of Henry Willis’s best work”.

Help the restorations of the organ by donating online.

Restoration Appeal

We have an ongoing restoration programme which focuses on the other aspects of the restoration of the building besides the current Tower Appeal.

Union Chapel Project

The project is responsible for the event's programme and the day to day running of the building. It also co-ordinates of all of the fundraising activites that take place in the building. This Includes 'Marginalised' and 'Chills in the Chapel' It also presents the free concert programme 'Daylight'  If you would like to help us with all this then please donate online.
