Union Chapel is a congregational church: we are non-hierarchical, and we make decisions democratically, in a meeting of our church members. We are a liberal chuch: we preach a gospel that is intellectually challenging, honest, and involved with every aspect of modern life. We are also, as a church, engaged with wider society: our trust deeds of 1887 stated that our building was to be used for "the worship of Almighty God", and also for "religious, philanthropic, moral, intellectual, or social purposes" which were not inconsistent with our beliefs. Currently this engagement takes several forms: we run a homelessness dropin centre and also a wide variety of musical and cultural activities (including an arts project for the homeless).

On Sundays we have morning worship at 11.00am, with communion on the first Sunday in the month: this is followed by coffee. On Wednesdays there is a lunch-time service at 12.45. This is followed by coffee at 1.15pm. We have a regular series of sermons by distinguished preachers; the
autumn programme is now available. They are at 11 am, usually on the second Sunday of the month.  We also have a quarterly newsletter: if yo want a free copy, email the newsletter editor.

Our present building was finished in the late nineteenth century, and is a classic example of Nonconformist church architecture: it has magnificent acoustics, and is a natural setting for concerts and also for organ recitals featuring our famous Father Willis organ. The buiding became somewhat derelict in the years after the Second World War, but is now being actively renovated: we have ongoing roof works at the moment, which are due to be finished early in 2006. Already the tower and cupola have been mended, pews repolished and facilities improved. But there is still much to do if we are to restore Union Chapel to its original splendour.
