Thomas Dolby & Friends

AGMP Proudly Presents

Thomas Dolby, the well-respected British songwriter and synthesist, will be playing a very different kind of show at the Union Chapel on Feb 28th 2010. Thomas’s 1984 touring band will be reunited for the first time in 25 years: but instead of rehearsing beforehand for a typical reunion concert, the band will meet ONSTAGE completely unprepared, and Thomas will refresh their memories and work over the parts to the songs, reminiscing and telling stories as they go.

Dolby, who notched up several solo UK chart singles in the 1980s as well as featuring as a sideman for the likes of David Bowie and Roger Waters, quit music completely for nearly 20 years but has lately returned to music after a lengthy sojourn in Silicon Valley, where his company Beatnik Inc invented the patented polyphonic ringtone technology that has powered every Nokia mobile phone since 1999.

Following the acclaimed re-releases earlier this year of his first two EMI albums ‘The Golden Age Of Wireless’ and ‘The Flat Earth’, Thomas has been hard at work writing and recording new songs in his renewable energy-powered 1930s lifeboat on the East Anglian coast. He expects to release his first new studio album of 21st century later in 2010. But first, he has planned what promises to be a very special evening for his loyal audience, friends and musical collaborators. As Thomas wrote on his blog:

Instead of a yet another 80s reunion, I thought we could do something a little more contemporary, a little more Reality TV. So here’s the plan. We won’t rehearse the show at all. Instead, we’ll meet up onstage, completely unrehearsed. We’ll re-learn songs like ‘Hyperactive’, ‘Windpower’, ‘I Scare Myself’ and ‘One Of Our Submarines’, chatting and telling stories as we go. The concert will be a cross between a masterclass and a chat show. It’ll be very interactive and the audience can chime in with questions, comments and requests. At the end of the evening we’ll play a short set of the songs we’ve practiced, back-to-back.”

As well as Thomas’ former backing band including stalwart musicians Keven Armstrong, Matthew Seligman and Chucho Merchan, several special guests and collaborators may put in an appearance. Confirmed so far are the noted singer/Thereminist Bruce Woolley and two members of Prefab Sprout (three of whose albums Thomas produced) Further surprises are promised.
